Thermage skin tightening (Radiothermoplasty )
Cosmetic procedure that uses radio frequency energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin in a controlled way, promoting a healing response in the underlying tissues that give the skin its support. This healing response is accomplished via the stimulation of increased collagen production and remodeling, and results in tighter, firmer, and smoother skin in the treated area.
Thermage is an aesthetic treatment that can eliminate common signs of aging, like wrinkles and sagging facial skin without the need for invasive surgery. This makes it ideally suitable for people who are only looking to make slight enhancements to their appearance, and prefer not to have to go under a scalpel, get prodded with needles, burnt with lasers or chemicals.
In general, the best candidates for Thermage are : -
- Physically healthy
- Psychologically stable
- Wanting to look younger and more refreshed
- Wanting to enhance their facial appearance
- Well informed in regard to the procedure's outcome
- Realistic in their expectations
- The above is only a partial list of the criteria that your physician will consider in determining whether or not this procedure is appropriate for you. Be sure to ask your physician if he/she considers you an ideal candidate for Thermage.
Q. How are thermage treatments performed ?
During the procedure, the doctor uses a device known as ThermaCool that tightens and lifts the skin in order to smooth out wrinkles and restore facial contours. The ThermaCool device uses the ThermaTip, which delivers RF energy to the skin. The doctor controls the amount of RF energy, balancing your comfort and optimal results.
When the ThermaTip touches the skin, it heats a large volume of collagen in deeper layers of the skin and its underlying tissue while at the same time cooling the outer layer and protecting it. This causes deep structures in the skin to immediately tighten. Over time, the skin will tighten further, and result in healthy, smooth looking skin.
Q. How long do thermage treatments take ?
The Thermage procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on how large of an area needs to be treated.
|Thermal applicator tip is applied to the skin
||A special coolant is released during treatment
Another advantage to Thermage is that the procedure can be done during a lunch hour. So patients can take a lunch, have their Thermage procedure, and come back to work looking younger. That's why this procedure has been referred to as the "lunch hour facelift".
Q. How many treatments will I need ?
A single treatment has produced good results in a significant number of patients. However, your doctor will assess the number and frequency of treatments required to achieve optimal results for your skin.
The Benefits of Thermage
Thermage will provide the following benefits in many people :-
- Tighter skin
- Improved jowling
- Tightened Jawline
- Tighter skin under your chin
- Higher eyebrows
- Softer forehead lines
- Softer scowl lines
- Softer crow's feet
- Softer nasolabial creases (around nose and mouth)
- Reduced active acne
- Softening of acne scars
Unlike laser treatments, Thermage works just as well on people with darker skin types as those with light skin types.
You will likely experience some redness and swelling after the procedure. Redness may last 1-2 hours, but occasionally lasts for a few days. Swelling is usually mild-moderate, but lasts longer - usually about 3-7 days. Very mild swelling may persist longer. In general, the more swelling and redness you have, the greater results you are likely to see.
Results are seen at different times for different people. Some start to see improvement as soon as one month after Thermage. Others begin to see improvement after 2-3 months. All continue to improve for a total of six months after the treatment. As noted above, a few people fail to see substantial improvement after the first treatment and are encouraged to have a second treatment six months later.
Thermage has been in existence since 2000. Those who were treated at that time have shown consistent results with no deterioration since then. So, we know that Thermage lasts at least this long. It is projected that the benefits from Thermage may last as long as 5-10 years, but there is no way of knowing this yet. Time will tell.
Risk and limitations
Significant risks with Thermage procedures are infrequent, but the potential side effects to the treatment are : -
However these side effects listed above usually disappear in a few days or weeks. Consult your doctor for more detailed information on the safety of Thermage.
Q. How long will the effects of the Thermage procedure last ?
Recently published studies show that improvements continue for at least 6 months after a single treatment session. Other studies show that thermal collagen changes can last several years, depending on the rate of the aging process.
Q. Is Thermage permanent ?
Thermage is a non-invasive procedure, and it does not use lasers or other technology that is only effective on certain skin types. Thermage is not, however, permanent. Immediately following the Thermage procedure, you will be able to see results from the CRF technology tightening your collagen fibers. One of the largest benefits of Thermage is that it stimulates the collagen fibers in your skin, causing them to produce more collagen. This allows your Thermage to not only be long-lasting, but also improve over time. Also, the Thermage procedure can be performed again to renew the results when they begin to fade.
Q. Is Thermage painful ?
During the Thermage procedure, you will feel a heating sensation within your skin as the CRF technology stimulates your collagen fibers. The heating sensation you feel will indicate that the collagen fibers are being appropriately treated. In order to ensure your comfort, the tip of the Thermage device and your skin is cool before, during, and after each time it is used on your skin. Depending on your needs, Dr. Rivkin can provide you with pain medications or topical anesthetics to make sure you do not feel discomfort during the Thermage procedure.
