Incision for Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction is performed through incisions with surgical removal of the excess tissue and skin that contribute to large and pendulous breasts. The most common approach is a keyhole incision pattern. The nipple remains attached to its original blood and nerve supply, is repositioned. The areola is reduced in size.
The incisions are brought together to reshape the new smaller breast. Deep non-removable sutures are used to support the newly shaped breasts. Only few sutures and surgical tape close the top skin. Occasionally, for extremely large pendulous breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed from their blood supply and grafted. In any case, the incision lines are around the areola, from the areola down to the crease line and on the crease line under the breast . These scars are visible and permanent, although usually well concealed beneath a swimsuit or bra.
Recovery period after Breast Reduction
Discomfort is well controlled by oral medication. A support bra is recommended around the clock for the first few weeks. You should engage in light walking as soon as possible to minimize the potential for blood clots and other complications. A return to light activity is possible as soon as you feel ready, usually within a few days of surgery.
You may be able to return to work and more normal activity within 10 days, as long as you do not engage in any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling dissipates and breast shape and position settles. Keep in mind that recovery period varies from patient to patient.
For three weeks you should avoid raising your elbows higher than your armpit. The pink scar will remain but they will fade gradually after several months.
