For the Dutta family of Barisa, every doctor and nurse of the pediatric team were Santa Claus of real life. When the rest of the world was breaking early slumber and getting prepared to celebrate Christmas, they rushed Ayushi, their 6-year-old daughter with complaints of vomiting and frequent attacks of senselessness.
Despite the benign history of her illness (cough, fever and vomiting), Dr. Shampa Mitra Pahari, Consultant Paediatrician did not take more than a few seconds to assess the extreme seriousness of the situation.
The bizarre pattern of her ECG and the fact that her heart was hardly pumping made the doctors wonder how she was continuing with life. Her heart rate fluctuated from 80 to 170 within minutes and these attacks of arrhythmia were potentially life-threatening. "With a serious infliction of viral myocarditis, where the pumping muscles of the heart swells up, the heart was so irritable that any attempt of placing life-saving external pacemaker, would be further deleterious", said Dr. Debasish Biswas, Pediatric Cardiologist, who led the course of the entire treatment. With most of the medications reacting adversely, the doctors were left with very little choice.
Very careful titration of drugs and fluids and hour to hour close monitoring by the Intensive Care team started to bear fruit. She was stabilized and then began to show signs of improvement. Her heart pumping improved significantly and she was back to her bouncy bright self within short time. She was discharged from the hospital on January 02, 05. "Thanks could not be the word to pay my gratitude to Dr. Biswas', while Dr. Biswas and all his team mates.
"This child's going home was a miracle made possible by the excellent infrastructure, and superb motivation at every level of the team comprising of consultants, junior doctors and nurses", said Dr. Biswas. We the Apollo Eagles felt great in changing a murky Christmas to a dazzling New Year for the family.
