Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata : -

The Department of cardiovascular surgery is competent to render all kind of service to help a heart beat stronger.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) at the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata : -

With ischemic heart disease striking at an epidemic rate, this single intervention is required by majority of adult heart patients. Instead of usual vein to artery graft, the hospital also performs artery to artery graft, where as the name implies, an artery from the heart itself is used to bypass the blocked portion of the blood vessel and carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles.

Total arterial revascularization is done on patients with a diffuse coronary disease where the plaque is drilled out entirely and then grafted. All the surgeries performed on coronary artery are done on beating heart , where the surgery is carried by stabilizing a small portion of the heart, while the rest of the organ continues pumping.

Emergency Cardiac surgery at the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata : -

Usually cardiac surgery is a planned event where the doctors have adequate time to plan for it. But there are some conditions which calls for surgery within minutes. Surgery for aneurysm tops the list of such emergency interventions.

A sac-like protrusion from a blood vessel or the heart, resulting from a weakening of the vessel wall, the aneurysms form one of the most complicated cardiovascular ailments and sometimes requires an emergency intervention. Aneurysms are like time bombs, likely to rupture any moment and spill blood and cause life-threatening complications.

The location of aneurysms has to be precisely located, often with the aid of radiological tests like CT, MRI and surgically repaired. The timing of the surgery is of paramount importance. A number of emergency interventions have been performed in the hospital where the patient has been taken directly from Emergency Room to the Operation Theatre.

A number of CABGs have also been done on an emergency basis where the heart had to be pumped manually for three minutes to maintain vital circulation.

The majority of valvular ailments can be attributed to Rheumatic Heart Disease, which badly damages the delicate valves. It is rampant in Indian scenario, where the community hygiene awareness is very low.

Repairing and replacements of valves with prosthetic and tissue valves are done on a routine basis. We have conducted a Mitral Valve Replacement on a young girl from Bhutan, suffering from severe mitral regurgitation, after terminating her pregnancy and evacuating the uterus under general anesthesia, all within one week. After surgery, the patients are counseled on medication and lifestyle.

Surgeries for Congenital Heart Disease at the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata : -

One out of 125 babies are born with a congenital heat defect, most of which can be surgically corrected to ensure that they grow up normally. Surgical closure of ASD, VSD, PDA, repairing of Tetralogy of Fallot, Transposition of Great Arteries, Double Outlet Right Ventricle, Valve Atresia, Valve Stenosis and Regurgitation etc are done with high success rate.

Several cases congenital anomaly is operated in minimally invasive technique, where a small incision is made just below the breast. Apart from lesser pain and fast recovery, this method proves to be a boon for young girls for the better cosmetic prospects.

Achievements of the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata : -

Successful Kidney Transplant of a Kid [ Youngest patient to be transplanted in Eastern India ]

Somnath Das was born with just one kidney and that too started malfunctioning before he completed the first decade of his life. He suffered from recurrent urinary tract infection, high blood pressure. anaemia, vomiting, poor appetite, had poor skeletal growth and was unable to participate in normal childhood activities, In the middle of 2004 it was detected that he suffered from chronic renal failure and there was no hope of revival of his kidney. A kidney transplant was the only option before the family with father donating one of his kidneys.

The surgery done on brought forward a number of technical hitches. It was difficult to accommodate an adult kidneys in a child who although was of 7 years, looked like hardly 4-5 year of age. Connecting the adult arteries with an average cross-section of 9-10 mm with that of this boy having arteries as thins as 3 mm was also a challenging task.

But with immense expertise of the doctors and surgeons like Dr. V.V.Lakshminarayanan, Consultant Nephrologist, Dr. Vinay Mahendra, Consultant Urologist, Dr. Ramesh Sheshadhri, Consultant Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon, Dr. Joydip Bhadra Roy, Consultant Surgeon and support of the paramedical team, the surgery progressed smoothly.

The donated kidney began to function normally within 48 hours. Both the boy and his father continues to do well. The boy is expected to be discharged in about 10 days. He can look forward to a completely normal and active life with a careful eye on maintaining good personal hygiene and few medications.
