Telemedicine
The advancement in telecommunication and satellite communication in the recent years has experienced many fold development in India in IT enabled services, BPOs, Overseas communication, rural telephony, and also in the field of medicine. Telemedicine is the new buzz word amongst the healthcare administrators around the world and the buzz is catching fast in India too.
In the last decade leading hospitals and healthcare providers in India have used telemedicine as a medium of communication between medical fraternity in seeking opinion for rendering better patient care services and sharing of knowledge base to the fellow counterparts.
Making healthcare accessible reduces investment in health thus contributing to overall economic and social development. India faces various problems in the provision of medical services and health care, including funds, expertise and resources. To meet this challenge, the governments and private health care providers must make use of existing resources and the benefits of modern technology. Also with limited medical expertise and resources, telecommunication services have the potential to provide a solution to some of these problems. Telemedicine has the potential to improve both the quality and the access to health care regardless of the geography. It enables medical and health care expertise to be accessed from under served locations.
In India only one-third of households are in urban areas, with two-thirds in rural areas but majority of healthcare activities and availability of healthcare facilities are present in urban areas. The advancements in healthcare and making healthcare available to many in these rural areas are still grim. The third NFHS Survey (2005 -06) reports that Sixty-eight percent of households (56% of rural households and 93% of urban households) have electricity. Fifty- five percent of households have no toilet facilities.
Three-fourths of rural households have no toilet facilities. Eighty-eight percent of households use an improved source of drinking water (95% of urban households and 85% of rural households), but only 25 percent have water piped into their dwelling, yard, or plot. One-third of households treat their drinking water to make it potable; half of those that treat their water strain the water through a cloth, and almost one-third boil the water.

[ MEDICAL GENETICS ]
The department of Medical Genetics began in November 2005. It is headed by a UK trained specialist, Dr Meenakshi Bhat, formerly working as Consultant in Clinical Genetics at Guy's & St Thomas' hospitals, London.
In the last two years since starting over 2000 families from all over the country and abroad have been evaluated and counselled for a wide variety of genetic disorders. Meticulous records are maintained in the all families that have been seen. Stories of some families helped in the genetics department are listed here.
[ PEDIATRICS - NARAYANA CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL ]
At present, we have started the neonatal surgery, pediatric surgery and pediatric urology and general pediatric and neonatal services. In addition one pediatric intensive care unit of 20 beds with all support equipment and staff is operational. This is in addition to the extensive infrastructure available for the cardiac and cardiac surgery services. In 3 months we will have facilities to treat 150 babies with both surgical and medical problems. A brand new children's hospital facility with 500 beds is planned and will be ready in 2007. This will be a state of the art, child friendly and unique facility catering to the needs of our children and in keeping with our hospital-home-school concept.
In addition to providing routine tertiary level care for children of all ages our thrust at the Narayana Children's Hospital will be to develop advanced pediatric care, make it affordable and, therefore, available to a larger number of patients.
In the surgical specialties we will accomplish the following : -
Neonatal surgery. Our aim is to offer all neonates or infants who come to us with a problem high quality comprehensive care at the Narayana Children's Hospital regardless of whether they can offered it or not. We are acutely aware that very often these problems befall young parents, often just married, who cannot afford these specialized treatments.
Minimally invasive surgery: equipment and expertise already exists to provide advanced laparoscopic surgery in children. Using this technology, operations that previously required relatively large incisions to treat conditions of the spleen, kidney, intestines and urinary bladder will now be successfully treated using laparoscopy.
Organ transplantation: With considerable prior experience in kidney transplantation in children we have already identified the team to perform both kidney and eventually liver transplantation. Applications for permission from appropriate authorities are already underway.
Reconstructive and pediatric endo-urology: All children with complex urological anomalies can be successfully corrected. The service has already conducted a number of reconstructive procedures.
Paediatric Oncology services: All children's tumors and cancers are treated.
The general pediatrics services provided include : -

Pediatric Intensive care and hig dependency care.
Pediatric respiratory medicine and asthma.
Pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology services (including endoscopy therapeutic endoscopy).
Pedaitric neurology service (including neurophysiology laboratory).
Pediatric Hematology and bone marrow tranplant services.
Nurtition services.
Physiotherapy services.
Clinical Genetics: Clinical genetics is an area fast gaining importance in the management of children with several disorders. All congenital anomalies and several metabolic disorders benefit from inputs for a Clinical Genetisist. Prenatal counseling in couples with a high risk pregnancy also forms a vital part of the overall care that we provide.
In the pediatric medical field we have already identified eminent faculty from India and abroad who will undertake research pertinent to our country and treat diseases in the fields of neonatology, pediatric pulmonology, hepatology and gastroenterology. Common problems like, asthma in childhood, the affect and treatment of HIV/AIDS in children and inflammatory bowel disease in the tropics needs to be urgently addressed.
Briefly, the Narayana Children's Hospital will serve as an advanced paediatric centre for research, training and service.
